Overview: Two Terminals, Seven Concourses

Hartsfield-Jackson comprises two main terminals: the Domestic Terminal (North and South sides) with six concourses (T, A, B, C, D, E), and the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal with Concourse F. All concourses are connected airside via the underground Plane Train automated people-mover and a parallel pedestrian walkway, so passengers do not need to exit security to transfer between concourses. The total airport complex covers 156.1 acres of terminal/airside space within the overall 4,700-acre airport property. There are approximately 193 gates spread across all concourses.

Domestic Terminal — North Side

The North side of the Domestic Terminal houses check-in counters and security checkpoints for airlines other than Delta, primarily serving Southwest Airlines, Frontier, Spirit, American Airlines, United, Alaska Airlines, and other non-Delta carriers. Baggage claim for arriving passengers is on Level 1 (ground floor). The MARTA Airport Station is located between the North and South baggage claim areas at the western end of the terminal.

• Concourse T: Gates T1–T15. Mixed use: American Airlines Admirals Club, Delta Sky Club, and United Club are all located here, making it unusually lounge-rich. Dining includes Bojangles and Subway.
• Concourse A: Gates A1–A34. Primarily Delta domestic operations. Features Delta Sky Club (near Gate A17), currency exchange, and 20+ dining and retail outlets including P.F. Chang's, SweetWater Brewing Company, and Dunkin'.

Domestic Terminal — South Side

The South side is dominated by Delta Air Lines, which uses it as the operational core of its global hub. It was substantially built and expanded alongside Delta's growth from the 1980s onward.

• Concourse B: Gates B1–B36. Delta mainline domestic routes. Features Delta Sky Club with high ceilings and panoramic airfield views. Also home to Minute Suites (paid nap/rest pods). Dining includes Chick-fil-A and various fast-casual options.
• Concourse C: Gates C1–C57 (the largest concourse at ATL by gate count). Delta domestic and some regional operations. Delta Sky Club near Gate C37 (open daily 6:45 AM – 10:30 PM). Dining: Starbucks, Jersey Mike's, Chick-fil-A, LongHorn Steakhouse.
• Concourse D: Gates D1–D46. Delta domestic and international connecting operations. Notable: the brand-new, 24,000 sq ft Delta Sky Club Concourse D-Center Point (opened April 2025) near Gate D18 — the largest lounge in Atlanta by capacity (506 seats), featuring a 16-seat bar, two beverage stations, a buffet, six soundproof phone booths, and panoramic airfield views. Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal (Concourse F)

Opened in May 2012, the International Terminal is located on the east side of the airport campus and is connected to the Domestic Terminal via the Plane Train (airside, post-security) and a free shuttle bus (landside, pre-security). The journey between the International Terminal and Domestic Terminal via Plane Train takes approximately 5–8 minutes; the landside shuttle takes 10–20 minutes and should not be relied upon for tight connections.

• Concourse F: Handles all international arrivals and a large share of international departures. Home to international carriers including Air France, KLM, British Airways, Lufthansa, Korean Air, Turkish Airlines, ANA, and others, plus Delta international widebody operations.
• Customs and Border Protection (CBP): All international arrivals clear US Customs and Immigration in the International Terminal before accessing baggage claim.
• Lounges: Delta Sky Club (with shower suites); The Club at ATL in Concourse F (mezzanine level adjacent to the interfaith chapel) — accessible to Priority Pass members and select American Express cardholders. Plane Train & Pedestrian Walkway

The Plane Train is ATL's signature underground automated people-mover connecting all seven concourses (T, A, B, C, D, E, F) and the Domestic Terminal. It runs 24/7 in both directions. Journey times: approximately 2–3 minutes between adjacent concourses; 10–12 minutes from Domestic Terminal to Concourse F. A parallel underground pedestrian walkway allows walking between concourses in approximately 5 minutes per concourse (total walk from T to F: ~25–30 minutes).

Getting to and from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

Hartsfield-Jackson is exceptionally well-connected to the Atlanta metro area by rail, road, and shared-ride services. The single most important fact for budget travelers: MARTA's heavy rail line stops directly inside the Domestic Terminal, making ATL one of the few major US airports with a true walk-off-the-plane, walk-onto-the-subway connection.

MARTA Rail (Red & Gold Lines)

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) operates the Airport Station directly beneath the Domestic Terminal, between the North and South baggage claim areas. Both the Red Line (to North Springs) and the Gold Line (to Doraville) serve Airport Station, making it the southern terminus of both routes. All trains from the airport are northbound.

• Journey to Downtown (Five Points Station): approximately 20 minutes
• Journey to Midtown (Midtown Station): approximately 25–28 minutes
• Journey to Buckhead (Buckhead Station): approximately 35 minutes
• Frequency: Every 10–15 minutes during peak hours; every 15–20 minutes off-peak and weekends (as of 2025 service improvements)
• Operating hours: Gold Line approx. 4:30 AM – 1:30 AM; Red Line approx. 5:00 AM – 8:30 PM weekdays, 8:50 PM weekends (Gold Line covers late nights)
• Fare: $2.50 one-way. A reusable Breeze Card (costs $2.00 to purchase) is required — loaded at vending machines at Airport Station. Day passes and multi-day passes are also available.
• International Terminal note: MARTA does not have a station at the International Terminal (Concourse F). If arriving internationally, take the free shuttle bus to the Domestic Terminal first, then connect to MARTA. Allow an extra 30–45 minutes for this transfer.

Bus Services

MARTA operates several bus routes serving the airport, primarily useful for travelers heading to south-metro communities not served by rail. Route 110 (Airport–Lakewood) runs along I-75, covering more than 50 stops. Departures run every 40 minutes: Monday–Friday 5:13 AM – 12:43 AM, Saturday 6:33 AM – 12:33 AM, Sunday 7:03 AM – 12:03 AM. All MARTA buses require a Breeze Card; the standard fare is $2.50.

Greyhound FlightLink departs from the lower level of the North Terminal (Gate LN1) to cities across the US Southeast. Book via Greyhound.com or call +1 800-231-2222.

Groome Transportation offers shared-ride shuttles to Athens, Macon, Columbus, Fort Benning, and Birmingham. Reservations required: book at groometransportation.com or call (706) 324-3939 at least 24 hours in advance.

Taxi

Licensed taxis queue at the Ground Transportation Center on the Arrivals level of the Domestic Terminal (between doors W1 and W2) and at the arrivals level of the International Terminal (outside door A1). Atlanta operates a flat-rate zone system for journeys from ATL to key neighborhoods:

• Downtown Atlanta: approximately $36–$45 flat rate
• Midtown Atlanta: approximately $40–$48 flat rate
• Buckhead: approximately $45–$55 flat rate
• A $2 surcharge applies per additional passenger beyond the first.

Both Uber and Lyft operate at ATL with designated pickup zones. From the Domestic Terminal, ride-share pickup is located in the North Economy Parking Lot — take escalators near doors N2 and N3 and follow the orange signs. This is a 5–10 minute walk from baggage claim; factor this into your time.

Car Rental

All major rental car companies operate from ATL's Consolidated Rental Car Center (CONRAC / Rental Car Center, RCC), located southeast of the Domestic Terminal. Access is via the ATL SkyTrain — a free automated people-mover with a station directly outside the Domestic Terminal near baggage claim. The SkyTrain runs 24/7 and the journey takes approximately 5 minutes. Companies present include: Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Thrifty, National, Alamo, and Sixt.

Hotel Shuttles

Hotel shuttles for properties offering this service depart from the Purple Zone in the Ground Transportation area at the west end of the Domestic Terminal. Courtesy phones in baggage claim allow passengers to contact hotels directly. Most airport-area hotels within 3 km offer free 24-hour shuttles; always confirm at time of booking.

Renaissance Concourse Atlanta Airport Hotel is the only hotel physically connected to the Domestic Terminal complex, linked via a covered walkway. It is a full-service 4-star property with 387 rooms, featuring an outdoor pool, fitness center, restaurant (Concourse Grill), and lounge. Rates typically range from $180–$320/night. Given its location, it books quickly during peak periods — reserve well in advance.

ATL does not have airside capsule hotels or sleep pods (unlike some Asian hub airports), but the Renaissance Concourse and Westin Atlanta Airport are the closest to true transit hotels. For genuine budget accommodation, Days Inn by Wyndham Atlanta Airport and Motel 6 Atlanta Airport offer rooms in the $60–$90/night range, both with free 24-hour airport shuttles.

Overnight Stays in the Airport

ATL is a 24/7 facility and technically accessible overnight. The Domestic Terminal remains open, though services wind down significantly after midnight. Overnight travelers generally sleep in seating areas near Concourses B and C (the most comfortable seating in the domestic concourses). The International Terminal is not recommended for overnight stays as it has limited seating post-security. ATL implemented a broad rate increase on May 1, 2025 across most on-airport lots. The following rates are the published official rates. Note: South Economy Lot remains partially impacted by ongoing terminal construction; a new ~6,700-space South Deck is expected by mid-2026.

EV charging stations are available in the Domestic Daily and Hourly Decks. Charger availability and specifications — check the airport's website for current locations, as the network is expanding as part of ATL's sustainability initiatives.

Payment

ATL parking facilities accept all major credit and debit cards and mobile payment. Cash is accepted at some booths. Exit lanes are automated with license plate recognition at most facilities.

Wi-Fi

ATL offers free Wi-Fi throughout the Domestic Terminal and all concourses under the network name "ATL Free Wi-Fi". No password is required — connect and accept the terms of service. Speed is generally adequate for email and video calls, though it can slow significantly in peak travel periods. For faster connectivity, individual Delta Sky Club locations provide high-speed Wi-Fi for members, as does the Amex Centurion Lounge in Concourse E.

114 food and beverage outlets serve the airport. ATL has worked to incorporate Atlanta's celebrated food culture: SweetWater Brewing Company Tap Room (Concourse A) serves the iconic Atlanta craft brewery's full lineup. Atlanta Braves All-Star Grill (Concourse D) serves full bar and American comfort food. One Flew South in Concourse E is frequently cited as one of the best airport restaurants in the US, offering upscale Southern cuisine with an Asian twist. Most food outlets are available until the last flights of the day, approximately 11 PM–midnight; limited 24-hour options are available near baggage claim and in vending areas.

Medical Services

A Grady Medical Center clinic (affiliated with Grady Memorial Hospital, one of Atlanta's premier Level I trauma centers) operates within the airport — one of the few US airports with a hospital-affiliated medical clinic on-site. The clinic is accessible from the Domestic Terminal. Additionally, pharmacies are located in the Domestic Terminal (landside) and several concourses (airside). Smoking Policy

Hartsfield-Jackson is a 100% smoke-free and vape-free facility — smoking is banned throughout all terminals and concourses. Designated outdoor smoking areas are located outside the North and South domestic terminal exits and outside the International Terminal, all of which require exiting the secure zone. Violators are subject to civil penalties and fines.

Prayer Rooms / Chapel

An interfaith chapel is located in the International Terminal (Concourse F, mezzanine level) — open to travelers of all faiths. Prayer and meditation rooms are also available in the Domestic Terminal; ask at Guest Services for current locations.

Showers

Showers are available to passengers with Delta Sky Club access in Concourse E and Concourse F Sky Clubs. The The Club at ATL (Concourse F, Priority Pass) also offers showers. Minute Suites in Concourse B include a rest space but not shower facilities. No public pay-per-use showers are currently available at ATL outside of lounge access.
