Airport Overview

Melbourne Airport, officially known as Melbourne (Tullamarine) Airport and operating under the IATA code MEL, is the primary international and domestic aviation gateway serving the state of Victoria and Australia's second-largest city. Located 23 kilometres (14 miles) northwest of the Melbourne CBD, adjacent to the suburb of Tullamarine, the airport opened on 1 July 1970, replacing Essendon Airport as Victoria's main civil aviation hub. It is owned and operated by Australia Pacific Airports Corporation (APAC) and covers a substantial 2,741 hectares (6,770 acres), making it one of Australia's largest airports by land area. The airport has its own gazetted suburb β€” Melbourne Airport, postcode 3045.

Melbourne Airport is the principal hub for Qantas and Jetstar, operating base for Virgin Australia and Rex Airlines, and the second busiest airport in Australia and Oceania, behind Sydney Kingsford Smith. The airport's curfew-free 24-hour operation distinguishes it from Sydney Airport and gives airlines scheduling flexibility year-round. In the financial year to June 2025, Melbourne Airport recorded its busiest year ever for international travel, welcoming 11,953,262 international passengers β€” an increase of 8.3% on the prior year β€” while total passenger movements reached 36,151,615, comprising approximately 24.2 million domestic and 12 million international travellers. December 2024 set the all-time record for a single month, with 3,393,977 passengers β€” surpassing the previous pre-pandemic December 2019 benchmark.

The airport operates four terminals: Terminal 1 (T1) for Qantas domestic, Terminal 2 (T2) as the sole international terminal, Terminal 3 (T3) for Virgin Australia domestic, and Terminal 4 (T4) for budget domestic carriers including Jetstar and Rex Airlines. T1, T2, and T3 are interconnected within a single building, while T4 is a 3–5 minute walk away under a covered walkway. The airport offers 68 gates total, a combined retail and dining precinct, multiple airline and independent lounges, on-site hotels, and multi-storey car parking. It serves 33 domestic destinations and international routes across Asia, Europe, the Pacific, North America, and South America.

A major infrastructure expansion is underway: the Federal Government approved a third parallel north-south runway in September 2024, with construction commencing in 2025 and completion expected by 2031 at a cost of $3 billion. The long-awaited Melbourne Airport Rail Link is also in planning, with a $5 billion elevated station at the airport agreed between APAC and the state government in July 2024, targeting a future opening in the early 2030s. A $500 million Naarm Way road project is also in progress, transforming road access to the T1/T2/T3 precinct.

🎯 Quick Facts: The airport operates 24/7 (curfew-free) with 4 (T1 Qantas domestic, T2 International, T3 Virgin Australia domestic, T4 Budget domestic) main terminals, serves over 33 domestic + international routes across Asia, Europe, Pacific, Americas, and is one of the busiest airports in the region, known for excellent connectivity and modern facilities.

Terminals & Gates

Terminal 1 (T1) β€” Qantas Domestic

Terminal 1 is dedicated to Qantas domestic and regional services. Check-in and bag drop are on the first floor, with a wide Qantas domestic lounge precinct airside offering some of the best domestic lounge facilities in Australia. The terminal is physically connected to T2 and T3 within the same building complex, with a short internal walk between them.

Qantas sold its T1 terminal to Melbourne Airport for $355 million in 2019, after which APAC took on management. The terminal underwent an upgrade to CTX (computed tomography) security scanning in 2024, bringing it in line with the newer systems at T3 and T4 β€” passengers no longer need to remove laptops and liquids from bags at T1 security.

Lounges in T1:

  • Qantas Club (T1 domestic): After security, spacious lounge with all-day dining, barista coffee, showers, 350-seat capacity. Open daily 04:45–00:00.
  • Qantas Business Lounge (T1 domestic): Flagship premium lounge for Business class and high-tier Qantas frequent flyers. Retro marble/wood design, floor-to-ceiling apron views, dining, showers. Open daily 04:45–00:00.
  • Little Lygon cafΓ© (T1): Priority Pass members can receive a $36 credit here as a lounge alternative.

Terminal 2 (T2) β€” International

Terminal 2 is Melbourne Airport's sole international terminal, handling all international arrivals and departures. Check-in is on the first floor (Level 1). The departures hall connects to a large duty-free precinct and the international gate areas. International arrivals on the ground floor include customs, biosecurity, and baggage claim. T2 is connected to T1 and T3 within the same building.

T2 is currently undergoing expansion planning β€” a major international terminal extension into the current forecourt is planned once the Naarm Way road project is completed (expected late 2026), delivering more gates, aircraft stands, check-in capacity, and a larger baggage reclaim hall.

Key airlines in T2 include: Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Qantas international, Cathay Pacific, Turkish Airlines, Air New Zealand, Etihad, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, Garuda Indonesia, Scoot, AirAsia X, Vietnam Airlines, China Eastern, Air India, British Airways, United Airlines, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, and many more.

Lounges in T2 (all airside, after security):

  • Qantas International Business Lounge (T2): oneworld flagship lounge; retro mechanical departure board, marble/wood, reclining armchairs. Access for Qantas/oneworld Business and elite passengers.
  • Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge (T2, Level 1): Star Alliance lounge; accessible to SQ Business/First, Star Alliance Gold members on qualifying flights. Hours aligned with SQ departures.
  • Air New Zealand Lounge (T2, ground floor after security): Star Alliance; accessible to NZ Business/elite and Star Alliance Gold on qualifying flights.
  • Plaza Premium Lounge (T2, near Gate 9): Open access; Priority Pass, DragonPass, Amex Platinum, or walk-in (~AUD $65–90). Food, bar, Wi-Fi, showers.

Terminal 3 (T3) β€” Virgin Australia Domestic

Terminal 3 is the home of Virgin Australia domestic services. Check-in is on the first floor. T3 is physically connected to T1 and T2. A major refurbishment project costing $81 million commenced in late 2023 to double the size of the baggage claim and arrivals hall, with completion expected in 2025. The terminal's passenger experience reflects Virgin Australia's repositioning as a full-service carrier post-restructure.

Lounges in T3:

  • Virgin Australia Lounge (T3): Situated after security on the mezzanine level. Access for Virgin Australia Business, Velocity Gold/Platinum, and Amex Platinum cardholders. Food, drinks, Wi-Fi.
  • Stomping Ground Brewery / Biggie Smalls (T3): Priority Pass members receive $36 credit here as lounge alternative.

Terminal 4 (T4) β€” Budget Domestic

Terminal 4 opened in August 2015, covers 35,000 mΒ², and is the home of Jetstar, Rex Airlines, and Link Airways for domestic services. It is linked to the main T1/T2/T3 complex via a covered walkway (3–5 minute walk). T4 has a food court, shops, and lounge on the first floor, with check-in and baggage claim on the ground floor. Transportation Guide

Getting to and from Melbourne Airport

Melbourne Airport is located 23 km northwest of the CBD via the Tullamarine Freeway (CityLink). As of 2025, there is no direct rail link β€” the Melbourne Airport Rail Link is in planning and expected in the early 2030s. The primary options are SkyBus express coach, public bus plus train, taxi, rideshare, and private car.

SkyBus (Express Coach) β€” Recommended Option

SkyBus Melbourne City Express is the fastest, most direct public transport link between the airport and the CBD. Double-decker coaches run between all airport terminals and Southern Cross Station (edge of the CBD), with luggage racks, free Wi-Fi, and air conditioning.

  • Journey time: 30–45 minutes to Southern Cross Station, depending on traffic
  • Frequency: Every 10 minutes at peak times; every 15–30 minutes overnight (4:00 AM – 1:00 AM "turn up and go"; reduced frequency 1:00 AM – 4:00 AM)
  • Fare (adult, 2025): AUD $24.60 one-way (~€14.30), AUD $41.20 return (~€24); pre-purchasing online gives AUD $20.85 each way on return tickets (~€12.10)
  • Child fares: Available for ages 4–16
  • Stops: Kerbside at T1, T3 & T4; follow red SkyBus signage outside arrivals
  • Other SkyBus routes: Peninsula Express (to St Kilda/Frankston), Eastern Express (to Box Hill/Doncaster), Sunshine Express (western suburbs)
  • From Southern Cross Station, trams and trains connect to the entire Melbourne network.

Public Bus + Train (Budget Option)

The cheapest option uses PTV (Public Transport Victoria) buses from the T4 Ground Transport Hub to Broadmeadows Station, then the Craigieburn train line to the CBD (Southern Cross or Melbourne Central).

  • Total journey time: 60–75 minutes (bus 20–30 min + train 30–40 min)
  • Fare: AUD ~$4.60–5.50 for a 2-hour Myki fare (zones 1+2)
  • Requirements: Myki card required β€” cash not accepted. Buy a Myki card at SkyBus kiosks at the airport (Myki Explorer card AUD $15 includes AUD $9 credit + tourist discounts)
  • Note: Not recommended for late-night arrivals or heavy luggage

Taxi

Metered taxis are available 24/7 at designated ranks outside T1, T2, and in the T4 Ground Transport Hub. Do not accept offers from drivers outside official ranks.

  • To Melbourne CBD: approximately AUD $65–75 (~€38–44), 25–40 minutes
  • Airport access fee: AUD $4.78 per trip added to meter for airport pickups
  • Night rates (9:00 PM – 5:00 AM) are higher
  • Silver Top Taxis and 13CABS are the main operators; pre-booking available

Rideshare (Uber, Ola, DiDi, GoCatch)

Rideshare is very popular and often cheaper than taxis. A surcharge of AUD $4.48 per trip applies at the airport (charged by the airport and often passed to the passenger).

  • Pickup zones: T1/T2/T3 passengers: Lane 1 of the T123 forecourt. T4 passengers: Level 2 of the T4 Ground Transport Hub.
  • To Melbourne CBD: approximately AUD $45–65 (~€26–38) via UberX, depending on demand
  • UberXL/Comfort: AUD $60–90 for larger groups or comfort rides
  • UberX PIN system operates at T1/T2/T3 β€” you receive a PIN and show it to the matching driver.

Car Rental

Six car rental companies operate on-site with desks on the ground floor of the Terminal Car Park building (between T1 and T3): Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt. Opening hours align with flight schedules; most operate approximately 6:00 AM – midnight daily.

Hotel Shuttles

Several nearby hotels offer complimentary shuttle services to/from the airport: PARKROYAL Melbourne Airport, Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport (24-hour), Ciloms Airport Lodge, Best Western Airport Motel, Mantra Tullamarine. Confirm details when booking.

Expansion

A third parallel runway (north-south) was approved by the Federal Government in September 2024. Construction commences 2025, completion expected 2031, cost AUD $3 billion (fully funded by the airport). The Melbourne Airport Rail Link elevated station is in detailed planning, with an anticipated opening in the early 2030s. The Naarm Way road project ($500M) will restructure all road access to T1/T2/T3, enabling the international terminal expansion out into the existing forecourt.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most popular option is SkyBus Melbourne City Express, which runs every 10 minutes to Southern Cross Station in 30–45 minutes for AUD $24.60 one-way (or AUD $20.85 each way on a return ticket). Taxis take 25–40 minutes for approximately AUD $65–75; Uber/DiDi/Ola cost AUD $45–65. The cheapest option is PTV public bus to Broadmeadows then train to the CBD for around AUD $4.60–5.50 total (requires a Myki card), taking 60–75 minutes. There is no direct airport train as of 2025 β€” the rail link is under planning.
Yes, free unlimited Wi-Fi is available across all four terminals. In T2, T3, and T4, connect to 'Airport Free Wi-Fi' β€” you'll need to register with an email address or via social login. In T1, the Qantas Wi-Fi network is available without registration. Speeds average 20–30 Mbps and are generally reliable. Power outlets and USB charging points are located throughout all terminals, with the highest concentration in the T3/T4 corridor.
For international flights: arrive 3 hours before departure β€” T2 check-in typically closes 60 minutes before departure for most airlines. During peak periods (Christmas/New Year, school holidays, Grand Prix week, Australian Open) allow 3.5 hours as queues at check-in, immigration, and security can be significantly longer. For domestic flights: 90 minutes is generally adequate, though 2 hours is recommended during busy periods or if checking bags. Qantas and Virgin also offer online check-in and bag drop shortcuts.
Melbourne Airport is open 24/7. The landside sections of all terminals remain accessible overnight; security checkpoints close between roughly 1:00–4:30 AM in each terminal. Rest areas are scattered throughout the terminals, though most seating has armrests which make lying down difficult. T1 and T3 have more sleep-friendly padded benches. There is no dedicated sleep lounge. For a comfortable rest, PARKROYAL Melbourne Airport (connected via covered walkway) offers day rooms; Ibis Budget is 600 m away. The airport does not provide cots to stranded passengers.
SmarteCarte luggage storage is located between T2 and T3 on the ground level, open 6:00 AM – 1:00 AM, with rates of approximately AUD $12–20 per item per day. Self-service coin/card lockers are available on Level 1 of the T4 car park (24 hours, approximately AUD $10–15). Luggage storage is also available at Southern Cross Station in the CBD if you want to explore Melbourne before heading to the airport.
Terminal 1 (T1): Qantas domestic. Terminal 2 (T2): all international flights. Terminal 3 (T3): Virgin Australia domestic. Terminal 4 (T4): Jetstar, Rex Airlines, Link Airways domestic. T1, T2, and T3 are in the same interconnected building; T4 is a 3–5 minute covered walk away. Always verify your terminal when checking in online β€” Qantas international uses T2, not T1. Rideshare pickup zones differ by terminal.
No, as of 2025 there is no direct train. The Melbourne Airport Rail Link is in planning, with construction expected to begin in the late 2020s and a target opening in the early 2030s. Until then, SkyBus (30–45 min to Southern Cross) is the fastest transit option. The cheapest option is PTV bus #59 or similar to Broadmeadows Station, then the Craigieburn train line (total 60–75 min, AUD $4.60–5.50 with Myki).
In T2 international departures, three open-access lounges accept walk-in passengers: Plaza Premium Lounge (~AUD $65–90), The House by Aspire, and Marhaba Lounge. All three accept Priority Pass and DragonPass. The American Express Centurion Lounge (T2, Level 3, Gates 9–11) is available for Amex Platinum/Centurion card holders. The Rex Lounge in T4 is accessible for AUD $33 walk-in or Priority Pass. Priority Pass members can also use a $36 credit at selected cafΓ©s in T1, T2, T3, and T4.
Several outlets operate around the clock. McDonald's at T3 landside arrivals and T4 airside food court are open 24/7. Hungry Jack's is in T2 airside at Gate 3. Subway in the T1/T2 walkway serves overnight on Thursday to Sunday. The SkyBus kiosks also sell snacks. T2 landside near Nando's and T2 airside after duty-free have complimentary shower facilities available overnight. Most other outlets close between midnight and 5:00 AM.
A metered taxi from Melbourne Airport to the Melbourne CBD costs approximately AUD $65–75 (~€38–44) under normal traffic conditions, covering the 23 km in 25–40 minutes. An airport access fee of AUD $4.78 is added to all fares picked up from airport taxi ranks. Night rates (9:00 PM – 5:00 AM) are higher. Rideshare apps (Uber, DiDi, Ola) are often AUD $10–20 cheaper. Use only official taxi ranks outside T1, T2, and the T4 Transport Hub β€” do not accept unlicensed offers.
The cheapest official parking is the Value Car Park, bookable online from AUD $14/day (drive-up from AUD $21/day), with a free 24/7 shuttle to all terminals every 15 minutes. Third-party off-airport operators like Jetport and Busy Beaver start from approximately AUD $7.50/day. The Terminal Car Parks are the most convenient but cost from AUD $59/day drive-up. Always book online in advance for the best rates β€” online pricing is always equal to or lower than drive-up.
Use the free Wait Zone on Mercer Drive β€” free for the first hour, perfect while waiting for someone to clear customs and collect baggage from T2 international. Once they're ready, coordinate via text and drive to the arrivals pickup zone. Melbourne Airport recommends using the T4 Car Park forecourt for pickups to avoid congestion on Departure Drive (T1/T2/T3 side). Rideshare UberX pick-up from T1/T2/T3 is from Lane 1 of the T123 forecourt; T4 pickups are from Level 2 of the T4 Transport Hub.

Pro Tips for Melbourne Tullamarine Airport

At The Airport:
  • At T2 international departures, the American Express Centurion Lounge is located between Gates 9 and 11 β€” take the escalator to Level 3. It's easy to miss because it's not at ground level. Amex Platinum cardholders get free access regardless of which airline or class they're flying.
  • The SkyBus stop is outside T1, T3, and T4 arrivals β€” look for the unmissable red signs outside baggage collection. You do NOT need to pre-book a specific departure time; buy a ticket at the kiosk or online and board the next available bus. Return tickets ($41.20) are valid for 12 months.
  • For Uber and DiDi pickups, T1/T2/T3 passengers go to Lane 1 of the T123 forecourt β€” not the taxi rank. T4 passengers use Level 2 of the T4 Transport Hub. Both zones are well signed once you're outside arrivals. You'll receive a PIN in the app to match with your driver.
  • The free Wait Zone on Mercer Drive (first hour free) is ideal if you're collecting someone from international arrivals β€” T2 customs and baggage claim can take 30–60 minutes after landing. Use the time in the Wait Zone rather than circling the terminal drop-off area.
Before You Fly:
  • There is no direct train to Melbourne Airport as of 2025 β€” budget at least 45 minutes for SkyBus from Southern Cross Station, or 30–40 minutes by Uber/taxi. During Formula 1 Grand Prix (March), Australian Open (January), and the Christmas–New Year period, add an extra 30–60 minutes for road congestion on the Tullamarine Freeway.
  • International passengers depart from T2 β€” not from the domestic terminals. Qantas international uses T2, even though Qantas domestic uses T1. The two are in the same building but check-in desks are in different sections. Follow signs carefully on arrival to the airport.
  • Book your parking online before you fly β€” online rates at the Value Car Park start from AUD $14/day vs AUD $21 drive-up, and the T123/T4 Terminal Car Parks are similarly cheaper online. The airport also offers a 2-hour grace period for online bookings, protecting you if your flight is delayed.
  • Download the Myki card app and top up before arrival if you plan to use PTV public transport. Buy a Myki Explorer card ($15) at the SkyBus kiosks on arrival β€” it includes $9 credit and covers your first day's travel plus tourist discounts.
Common Mistakes:
  • Arriving at the wrong terminal: Jetstar domestic uses T4, not T2. Many first-time travellers go to T2 (international) for Jetstar, then have to walk 5 minutes to T4. Always check your boarding pass or the airport website for your terminal β€” some airlines (e.g. China Southern) use multiple terminals depending on the service.
  • Expecting a train β€” Melbourne is the only major Australian city without a direct rail link to its primary airport as of 2025. First-time visitors often arrive expecting a metro service like Sydney's Airport Link. SkyBus to Southern Cross is the de facto 'airport train' and is clearly signposted.
  • Paying drive-up rates for parking β€” booking the Value Car Park online in advance costs from AUD $14/day vs $21 drive-up, saving 33%. For the T123 Terminal Car Park, drive-up rates jumped to $59/day in November 2025. A Cyber Monday (December 1) online discount is offered annually for the following year's bookings.
